Band Instrument List

All students in band will go through an instrument trial the first 2 weeks of school. This is the opportunity to try different mouth pieces and see which instrument might be the best for your child.

Most instruments can be rented from your local music store for $20 a month!

Flute: 

​

This instrument uses the most amount of air! If you walk or bike to school, this might be a good instrument for you because it is small. It can sometimes fit inside a backpack! The flute plays the higher notes in the band and is included in the woodwind family.

Clarinet: 

​

This instrument requires parents to purchase reeds every few months. Clarinets have a lower sound compared to the flute and has a small case which is helpful if you walk or ride the bike home.  This instrument is included in the woodwind family. 

​

Are you unsure if playing an instrument is right for you? Start with clarinet! There is have a high success rate with the clarinet! 

​

The clarinet also has the most pieces to put together. With practice, students will learn the correct way to put together the clarinet.

Trumpet: 

​

The trumpet is one of the higher sounding instruments in the brass family. This instrument is light to carry for students who walk or bike home. 

​

The trumpet can play lower and higher sounding notes.

Trombone: 

​

The trombone is a lower sounding instrument in the brass family. This instrument is the only one with a slide, not buttons or valves.

 

Students interested in playing the trombone will need to stretch their arm out for different notes.

Baritone:

​

The baritone is a lower sounding instrument in the brass family. The baritone is larger than any of the above instruments. If your child is interested in playing the baritone, ask Ms. Hayama to see if there is one your child can borrow from the school. 

​

The baritone plays the lowest notes in 5th grade.
